The album was recorded over a period of nearly two years, spanning from the 1980 ''[[Mirrors]]'' tour to the 1981 ''[[Fire of Unknown Origin]]'' tour, with two tracks recorded during the ''Black and Blue'' tour alongside Black Sabbath, with whom Blue Öyster Cult shared a manager in [[Sandy Pearlman]]. Midway through the ''Fire of Unknown Origin'' tour, drummer and founding member [[Albert Bouchard]] was replaced by longtime road crew member [[Rick Downey]].
